Honoring Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, an American national monument was born, the Lincoln Memorial. In 1922, the Lincoln Memorial Commission was created to oversee the construction of a memorial to the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. After a design competition, the commission chose architect Henry Bacon’s Greek temple design.
